Ian Hudson

Ian Hudson

Professional artist for thirty years, watercolours being my principal medium, however, I sometimes use charcoal (for life-studies and figures, pastels and pencil too). My subjects include landscapes, wildlife, portraiture, and maritime studies, particularly those of working sail on the Taw/Torridge estuary during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I also teach watercolours and life-drawing at various venues.

In 1980 Ian moved from suburban London to a shepherds’ cottage in a remote part of Exmoor and his professional career as an artist began. He attended the art group at Brendon, tutored by Mrs. Suzanne Bailey ( who studied at Norwich School of Art) and very soon was painting landscapes which sold at the group’s annual exhibitions in Brendon Village Hall. Soon Ian was to branch out and began setting up his own one-man exhibitions, firstly in Barbrook Church hall, and subsequently at North Devon Yacht Club in aid of R.N.L.I. ( now in its twenty-sixth year). Other venues included The Commodore Hotel, Instow, Saunton Sands Hotel, and The Burton Gallery with Westward Ho! and Bideford Art Society. Ian now teaches up to six watercolour classes each week and a further life-drawing session at his home-studio in Westward Ho!

His other interests include music, and Ian is a keen member of the local folk-orientated scene, singing and playing guitar at various venues, including the pubs in Appledore, Bideford Folk Festival, fund-raising concerts etc…

With three friends, he plays in a casual group known as “Wing and a Prayer”, and often performs songs such as those by Steve Knightley of the band ”Show of Hands”. Again, the group are often requested to take part in local charity fund-raising events/concerts.
